GLOBAL PARTICIPANTS IN WOMEN'S WORLDS CONGRESS 2008

Over 1,500 women from around the world are expected attend the 2008 Women's Worlds Congress from July 3-8, 2008 in
Madrid, Spain. This event, which is organized by the Worldwide Organization for Women's Studies (WOWS), has been held every
three years since 1981 in a variety of countries, for a total of 10 conferences
Featured speakers come from several different countries, and include the renowned feminist and Arab political dissident Nawal El Saadawai, Somali Mam, founder of AFSIP (Women in Precarious Situations)j, Amelia Varcárcels, a feminist philosopher who is best known for her book, The Fear of Equality (1993); Nirvan González Rosa of Puerto Rico, general coordinator of the Women's Latin American & Caribbean Health Network; Sandra Harding, a feminist theorist at UCLA in California, USA; Judith Botero Escobal, feminist anthropologist and specialist in women's sexual and reproductive health and human rights; Marilyn Waring, feminist economist from New Zealand and author of the well-known book and film, "If Women Counted;" and Senia Ahmed, a founder of the women's movement in the Western Sahara, among many others.
FIRE COVERAGE & PARTICIPATION
In addition to covering the event as media, FIRE has organized three session that feature their international women's internet radio and also the Wings of the Butterfly Project (Alas de Mariposa), media organization and also the Wings of the Butterfly (Alas de Mariposa) project, as well as a panel that features María Suárez, talking about her newly published book: Mujeres, Metamorfosis del Efecto Mariposa (Women, Metamorphosis of the Butterfly Effect, published by Editorial Norma in Costa Rica, 2008).
