AUGUST 2009

HOW TO BECOME A VIRTUAL INTERNATIONAL OBSERVER
Honduras, August 17-21, 2009

  • Register NOW to become a VIRTUAL INTERNATIONAL OBSERVER by sending an email to observatoriovirtual@radiofeminista.net and letting us know who you are and why you are interested in being part of it. Let the women of Honduras know that you are going to follow their cases and support their denouncements against violence against women and femicide in the Virtual Observatory in the webpage of Feminist International Radio Endeavour (FIRE).  International solidarity is critical at this time, according to the Feminists in Resistance of Honduras.

  • Commit to follow FIRE's coverage from Aug. 17-21, and listen to the special webcast transmission on August 19th.

  • Help us distribute the information among your networks, friends and solidarity organizations so that they can participate also.

  • Write a brief OBSERVER REPORT for the day(s) you follow or listen to FIRE, which relates your opinion about what you learned or heard through FIRE from Honduras that day and how it is related to your country of origin, and referring to the role and political positioning of women and their agenda. Send your report to observatoriovirtual@radiofeminista.net.

What is a feminist observatory?

Mesoamerican feminists launched the creation of Petateras with a four-program agenda, one being the creation of a Feminist Transformational Watch.  FIRE’s Virtual Observatory was created to accompany that initiative. Such Observatories have taken place in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Oaxaca, Costa Rica, the United States Social Forum in Atlanta and The Forum of the Americas in Guatemala.

WEBCAST ON AUGUST 19th  (schedule to be announced soon)

The webcast programming will take place 12:30-1 p.m. (Guatemala or RMT) in English, and 5:30-6:30 pm in Spanish. It will feature live interviews of women from Guatemala who have witnessed violence, activists, women leaders, journalists & communicators, and members of women's and feminist groups.

During the live programming, we will be in contact with women who have witnessed violence, activists and organizations that have struggled to restore a fragmented social weave, recognizing that violence against women both during the civil war of the 1980s-90s and continuing today has created a web of impunity and silence, characterized by unequal distribution of  power, the dysfunction of the State, and the erosion of rights of women and indigenous peoples in particular.

VIRTUAL OBSERVATORY

The initiative to create a Virtual Observatory on Feminist International Radio Endeavor (FIRE-RIF) arose from an agreement of 25 feminists of the Mesoamerican region, United States and The Netherlands that met in Panama for the event: “Imagining and reinventing feminisms of the future”, held September 19-22, 2006 under the sponsorship of  Just Associates and supported by HIVOS.

Mesoamerican feminists launched the creation of Petateras with a four-program agenda, one being the creation of a Feminist Transformational Watch.FIRE’s Virtual Observatory was born to accompany that initiative. Such Observatories have taken place in Nicaragua, Oaxaca, Costa Rica, the United States Social Forum in Atlanta and The Forum of the Americas in Guatemala.
