 2006 CAMPAIGN

CONNECT TO A NETWORK FREE OF VIOLENCE!

WHY THIS CAMPAIGN?

With the development of the Internet, a space has opened up where violence against women is reproduced in various forms, expressions and dimensions.

In some cases we have identified new forms of oppression and discrimination, or in other situations we see that existing forms of violence against women are proliferating on the Internet.

From an interaction perspective, contact across the Internet works as a way to quickly mobilize, create networks of instant contact, multiply information, express support, show solidarity, etc, but it is also been used as a means to commit crimes that are not regulated under national or international legislation. Some of the most common crimes in the Internet against women include sexual harrasment, violence in pornography, human trafficking, violation of privacy and intimacy and child pornography.

Virtual life is not independent from everyday life, the ups and downs of cybernetical interactions have their consequences in the real life of the people involved. This is why these "new" ways in which violence is been expressed throughout the Internet should be rejected and counteracted in an effort to eradicate violence against women in all of its expressions.

In the case of women, the Internet has reproduced a pattern of violence, sexual harrassment, discrimination, control and violation of human rights.  The purpose of the "Connect to a Network Free of Violence" campaign is to raise awareness of the necessity of a respectfull and violence-free Internet, while documenting the new ways in which already  existing violence is expressing.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES

  • To contribute to the elimination of violence against women on the Internet, to expose and confront the abusive use of this technology for violating women’s human rights.

  • To encourage individuals, organizations, and networks to use the Internet in a manner that is free of violence and to create and promote respectful policies and ways of using the Internet.

  • To contribute and generate interactions that respect women’s human rights through use of the Internet as part of processes for democratization of the Internet.

  • To promote the development of a network free of violence, sexism, discrimination and racism, and that promotes and respects human rights, including those of women.

  • To expose connections among all forms of violence against women on the Internet, as well as to expose other forms of social and political discrimination.

  • To contribute to the documentation and collection of testimonies and cases of violence against women on the Internet.

  • To contribute to the creation and diffusion of data bases with forms and examples of violence against women in the Internet.

  • To contribute to the creation and diffusion of networks, data bases of resources, websites and programs that participate in efforts to eliminate violence toward women on the Internet.

  • To develop a feminist perspective and approach to violence toward women on the Internet, and not separate violence in the public sphere from that in the private sphere.

  • To contribute to exposing violence against women and its connection to other forms of oppression, sexism, homophobia, discrimination, racism, ethnocentrism and imperialism.
